Overview
Shanxi Province is located in the middle reach of the Yellow River Basin. To the east, the majestic Taihang Mountains form a natural barrier, bordering Hebei Province; to the west and south, the Yellow River forms a natural boundary, facing Shaanxi Province and Henan Province across the river; to the north, the ancient Great Wall extends across the region, and the province adjoins Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The province is named Shanxi because it lies west of the Taihang Mountains. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, it belonged to the State of Jin, hence its abbreviation “Jin.” In the early Warring States period, the State of Jin was divided among Han, Zhao, and Wei, so Shanxi is also known as Sanjin, literally “the Three Jin.” The province covers a total area of 156,700 square kilometers. At of 2025, its permanent resident population was 34.2million. It administers 11 prefecture-level cities and 117 county-level administrative units.
Geographical Location and Natural Conditions
Terrain
The outline of Shanxi’s territory forms a parallelogram slanting from northeast to southwest. It is a typical mountainous plateau extensively covered by loess, with terrain that is higher in the northeast and lower in the southwest. The interior of the plateau is uneven, with crisscrossing river valleys and diverse landforms, including mountains, hills, terraces, and plains. Mountains and hills account for 80% of the province’s total area, while plains and river valleys account for 20%. Most areas of the province are over 1,500 meters above sea level. The highest point is Yedou Peak, the main peak of Mount Wutai, with an elevation of 3,061 meters, making it the highest peak in North China.
Climate
Shanxi is located inland in the mid-latitude zone and has a temperate continental monsoon climate. Influenced by solar radiation, monsoon circulation, and geographical factors, Shanxi’s climate is characterized by distinct seasons, rainfall and heat occurring in the same period, abundant sunshine, significant climatic differences between north and south, sharp temperature contrasts between winter and summer, and large day-night temperature variations. The annual average temperature across the province ranges from 4.2°C to 14.2°C, generally increasing from north to south and decreasing from basins to high mountains. Annual precipitation ranges from 358 to 621 millimeters across the province, with uneven seasonal distribution. Rainfall is relatively concentrated in summer, from June to August, accounting for about 60% of the annual total, and its spatial distribution within the province is strongly influenced by topography.
Territorial Area
The province stretches approximately 682 kilometers from north to south and about 385 kilometers from east to west, covering a total area of 156,700 square kilometers, which accounts for 1.6% of China’s total land area.

• Ore Quality and Composition: Among important metallic minerals, there is a prevalence of low-grade ores over high-grade ores, and a higher occurrence of associated and coexisting minerals compared to single-mineral deposits.
Plant Resources
Shanxi is a true treasure trove of plant life, home to over 2,700 species of plants, including more than 460 types of trees. The landscape shifts as you travel across the province: the south and southeast are lush, diverse, and filled with broad-leaved forests; the central region is dominated by expansive coniferous forests; and the northern and northwestern areas feature rugged, beautiful grasslands and resilient shrubs like sea buckthorn. Beyond the scenery, the mountains hide incredible natural wealth, including protected rare species and over 1,000 types of wild medicinal herbs like codonopsis, astragalus, and forsythia, which have long been prized in traditional health practices. By the end of 2023, the province's forest area reached approximately 3.23 million hectares, with a forest coverage rate of 20.6%, reflecting a Shanxi that is growing greener and more vibrant every year.
Animal Resources
Shanxi is home to a rich variety of wildlife, boasting 439 known species, mostly terrestrial. The province takes significant pride in protecting its natural heritage, with 71 species listed under national key protection. Among these, 17 are Class I protected animals—including iconic species like the brown-eared pheasant, leopard, golden eagle, and sika deer—while another 54 are classified as Class II protected species, covering a wide range of birds, mammals, and amphibians. Additionally, there are 27 species under provincial protection, such as the gray heron, and over 300 other species that play vital roles in the local ecosystem or hold significant scientific and economic value.
Water Resources
Thanks to its rugged landscape of mountains and valleys, Shanxi is a vital watershed that feeds into two major river systems: the Yellow River and the Haihe River. The Yellow River basin covers about 62% of the province, while the Haihe River basin covers the remaining 38%.
Beyond the 965-kilometer stretch of the Yellow River that runs along the province’s borders, Shanxi is home to an extensive network of waterways. This includes 5 major rivers (such as the Fenhe and the Sanggan), nearly 50 medium-sized rivers, and close to 400 smaller streams.
Almost all of these rivers originate within the province and flow outward, making Shanxi the source for several key tributaries of the Haihe River. This critical role has earned Shanxi the nickname the "Water Tower of North China."
In terms of resources, the province receives an average annual rainfall of about 509 millimeters. Historically, Shanxi’s total annual water resources have been estimated at approximately 12.4 billion cubic meters, which includes both river runoff and groundwater.
Tourism Resources
As a cradle of Chinese civilization, Shanxi is an unparalleled open-air museum where “ancient history meets splendid scenery.” Holding 452 Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level—the highest number in China, accounting for 23.3% of the national total—the province preserves over 70% of China’s surviving above-ground ancient buildings that older than 800 years. Visitors can marvel at UNESCO World Heritage treasures, including the monumental Yungang Grottoes, the impeccably preserved Ancient City of Pingyao, and the sacred Buddhist temples of Mount Wutai, alongside unique architectural marvels like the cliff-hanging Xuankong Temple, the mural-rich Yongle Palace, the sprawling Haizhou Guandi Temple, the historical Jinci Temple, and the intricate courtyard folk culture found in the Qiao, Qu, and Wang Family Compounds. Shanxi’s natural allure is equally impressive, featuring the majestic Northern Sacred Mountain Hengshan, the refreshing summer sanctuary of Mianshan, the thunderous Hukou Waterfall—China’s second-largest—and diverse nature reserves like Pangquangou, Luya Mountain, Lishan Mountain, and Manghe. Moreover, as a historic revolutionary heartland, the province is deeply marked by pivotal sites such as the Eighth Route Army Headquarters, the Huangyadong Arsenal, and the Liu Hulan Memorial Hall, making Shanxi a profound destination where thousands of years of culture, nature, and revolutionary history converge.
Environmental Protection and Greening
According to the Technical Regulation on Air Quality Index , the number of days meeting air quality standards in the 11 prefecture-level cities ranged from 255 to 334.
In addition, the province’s forest area covered 3.577 million hectares, with a forest coverage rate of 22.8%. A total of 227.3 thousand hectares of afforestation area were completed throughout the year, among which artificial afforestation (including degraded forest restoration and aerial seeding) covered 180.3 thousand hectares, accounting for 79.3 percent of the total afforestation area.
